Admission to a Hungarian university is possible after completing 11 years of school. The requirements for applicants are quite lenient. For bachelor’s programs, it is sufficient to have an average GPA of 2.5 out of 5 and to confirm your language proficiency at the B2 level. This can be achieved through an internal language test administered by your chosen university.

This article will provide information about the cost of studying, the requirements, and the distinctive features of admission to bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs in Hungary.

Admission to universities in Hungary

How to choose a university

Hungary boasts a total of 24 universities, with six being among the top 100 universities in the QS Emerging Europe and Central Asia ranking[-]:

However, placing your trust solely in these rankings may not be the wisest approach. When selecting a Hungarian university in Hungary, you should also consider at least three additional criteria.

Programs in English

If your intention is to pursue studies in Hungarian, then this becomes an irrelevant criterion for you.

In total, Hungary offers approximately 500 programs conducted in English. However, a majority of these programs are available at the master's and PhD levels. Options for bachelor's programs are comparatively narrower. For example, Eötvös Loránd University only offers 11 programs[3], while Budapest University of Technology and Economics provides 48 programs[4], and the University of Debrecen surpasses these with around 54 offerings[5].

Admission requirements

Compared to other countries, Hungarian universities typically maintain more lenient admission requirements.

For instance, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 is required for universities in Finland. Contrarily, in Hungary, programs admit candidates with a 5.5 score[6].

Nevertheless, specific requirements vary between Hungarian universities. To elaborate, Corvinus University of Budapest mandates entrance exams for several programs. For business and management programs, you may be required to take a proficiency test in mathematics or submit SAT scores with a minimum of 500 points[7].

Cost of education

The cost of education depends on the chosen program. At the University of Debrecen, a year of study averages 6,439 USD, though the cost rises to 18,137 USD for medical programs[8]. Conversely, at the University of Szeged, the same education comes at a more economical rate, starting from 1,610 USD per year. Even for medical programs, the cost at this institution remains relatively affordable, amounting to 8,478 USD[9].

Requirements for admission to Hungary

Hungarian universities operate on a single entry e-admission system. Though currently lacking an English version, it offers convenience in accessing updated requirements and deadlines at universities using automatic page translation. Instructions for international admission via e-admission can be found here.

Direct applications to chosen universities are also possible. The process varies for each institution. Some only require sending a PDF application and documents via email, while others have their distinct systems with personalized accounts. For instance, SEMAPHOR at Semmelweis University has a separate portal for applications in English and German programs.

Essential requirements include a translated copy of your diploma in either Hungarian or English, coupled with a notarized transcript containing grades and course details.

Other requirements:

  • GPA. The minimum GPA required in your diploma is a 2.5 out of 5[10]. Medical universities often set a higher bar, typically starting from 4.3.
  • Language. Proficiency in Hungarian can be demonstrated through the ECL exam at a B2 level. If you are not planning to study in the local language, you must present an IELTS score of at least 5.5 or a TOEFL score of 72. Many universities also recognize the Duolingo English Test — 95, Cambridge — B2[6], and TOEIC — 785. Some institutions administer their own oral examinations.
  • CV. Your resume should succinctly outline your work experience, achievements, and scholarly publications.
  • Interview. A commonly requested component by Hungarian universities, interviews are usually conducted online. During these sessions, an admissions representative asks questions regarding your educational goals, expectations, and reasons behind program selection.

Application deadlines in Hungary

In Hungary, classes start in September and February. Application deadlines are usually in November, May, and June.

Be sure to verify the exact dates on the university websites.

Diploma legalization and recognition

Hungarian universities handle the legalization and recognition of certificates and diplomas internally. In cases where your educational level falls short for the intended program, an examination might be required. This typically occurs when specific subjects lack sufficient coverage or hours.

However, this method of recognition does not grant the right to employment in Hungary. If you plan to work while studying, you should get in touch with MEIK. The certificate processing fee is approximately 15000 to 165 USD. Documents can be submitted in person or by mail.
